Why eBay Live is the WORST place to learn how to sell on eBay, but Why I’m Still Attending

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

Think about this.  Who would you rather consult about how to prepare a tax return for maximum savings?  The taxman, or an indepdedent tax consultant?   If you believe the tax man is going to give you the best advice about every deduction and loophole then you’re deceiving yourself.  A similar situation exists with eBayeBay are in business to make money, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with that.  But don’t for one second believe that they’ll put your interests (i.e. profits) BEFORE theirs.  Yes, they treat sellers very well at eBay live, and quite frankly it’s a model example of how to put on a large seminar - they do a LOT of things right.  But fundamentally, remember that eBay live exists to increase profits of eBay.

So why am I attending again this year?  Quite simply, I look at what most sellers are doing and run as far as I can in the opposite direction.  If there’s one thing I can attribute my success on eBay to, it’s doing the complete opposite of what most people do.  There they are, a big mass of sellers in one corner, with nothing to make any of them stand out, while I stand out from the crowd in the other corner by heading the other way.

Think about what marketing is.  Isn’t it about cutting through the mass of messages that barrage us every day?  If we match our message by copying someone else, we blend in rather than stand out.  That’s how it is with eBay.  Copycat selling is rife on eBay, and I’m pleased to say I’ve never been part of it.

So by all means go and enjoy eBay live, I will too, but be wary about receiving advice directly from a company that has the main goal of profiting from you!
