Skype Says Sorry
Tuesday, August 21st, 2007Took me awhile to realize that when I couldn’t access Skype for a couple of days last week, it wasn’t my internet connection or some other local problem. Skype had a massive, major outage.
Screwed up my plans for two audio interviews, but we got by with that old fashioned device called the ‘telephone’. Skype is great for interviews because the quality is crystal clear, almost like you’re in the same room. I use a third-party tool called ‘Pamela’ which works really well for that purpose (see http://www.pamela-systems.com/).
Back to the outage issue, it’s one thing to apologize and another to demonstrate that you mean it. Fortunately, Skype went the latter route and gave all paid subscribers extra credit. Here’s part of their email message I received:
“As a goodwill gesture to all you faithful Skype Pro, Skype Unlimited, SkypeIn or Skype Voicemail customers, we’re adding an additional seven days to your current subscription, free of charge. And even if you didn’t miss out on using Skype last week - you can still have a week free on Skype, on the house!”
